What caused the American Civil War?
The Civil War was a war between the northern states and southern states that seceded, or separated from the Union. As the United State grew slavery became a prominent problem. The northern states believed slavery was wrong, yet the southern states depended on slavery for their economy. As new states were added controversy started over whether the new states should be slave states or free states. To try to solve this issues the Missouri Compromise was established. This failed as the controversy worsened. Shots were first fired after the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854. With the election of Abraham Lincoln as president in 1860 the south seceded from the Union. South Carolina was the first state to secede followed by six other states. Many people believe the Civil War was mainly about slavery but in fact it was also about political, economical, and social problems. With Lincoln leading the Union and Jefferson Davis leading the Confederacy, America went to war with heavy hearts and strong minds. Source:http://www.us-civilwar.com |
