Remembering: What does Samuel see out in the Atlantic Ocean?
Understanding: Sketch-to-Stretch. Imagine you are Samuel. What does freedom mean to you? In a small group or alone, draw a picture or diagram about what freedom means to you. Afterwords discuss your picture with the class. (50 Literacy Strategies by Gail Tompkins) Sketch-to-Stretch Example
Applying: In the story, Samuel was very afraid that they would get caught during their escape. Predict what would have happened if they would have been caught.
Analyzing: Analyze Samuel's fears when he and his mother are running away from their hut.
Evaluating: As the plan for freedom becomes clear in the story Samuel becomes skeptical. He is afraid the plan will not work. Evaluate the plan and identify what was good about the plan and what was bad about the plan. An example of a bad part of the plan was that there was a chance they would have not received permission to leave the harbors. An example of a good part would be they packed a white bed sheet to ensure that the Union ships would not fire at them.
Creating: Imagine you are escaping to freedom like Samuel was in the story. Create a plan to escape to freedom different from the one in the story.
