She graduated from Brandeis University and became a junior high school music teacher. When she went to Mississippi to teach she learned many facts about the African American culture that she was not aware of and is the reason she began to write about people's oppression an struggles. She is an award winning author of 48 fiction and non-fiction books. She began drawing at a young age and became very gifted at art. She graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts. She moved to New Jersey and began pursuing a study in children's book writing and illustrating at the Parsons School of Design in New York City. She is a member of the Rutgers University Council on Children's Literature and she was awarded Outstanding Woman 2002 in Arts and Letters in New Jersey.
